University Consultation & Guest Lecturing

Student midwives are the future of maternity and should graduate as culturally educated, registered midwives, having learned through an inclusive curriculum over the three year period that was centred on equality and diversity throughout all subjects.

As per the NHS Race & Health Observatory, often white is the normative standard whilst learning signs & symptoms in darker skin tones in the midwifery curriculum.

Universities have looked to decolonise their curriculums in the past and with new research evolving and data changing, this should be an ongoing action. Equality, diversity and inclusion should be the golden thread throughout the curriculum and if this is truly actioned, it benefits all women and birthing people.

Too often we attend universities to guest lecture and learn that our topics of education are not routinely taught on the degree. This needs to change as a matter of urgency.

Nya Birth Collective offer bespoke packages to consult universities on properly decolonising their curriculums whilst specifically training lecturers in depth to facilitate culturally sensitive teaching of topics with a view of improving outcomes for the global majority. We believe that specialist education in sensitive topics such as these needs to be delivered by lecturers who have had in depth anti-racist training themselves, to give them the confidence to facilitate and partake in the discussions and detailed questions that come from it. We are here to help you do that.

Nya Birth Collective also continue to take on bookings for guest lecturing and speaking on the above topics for lectures, midwifery society events and conferences.
